Bandipur

One of Nepal's most charming towns, Bandipur is a living museum of Newari culture, a beautifully preserved village crowning a lofty ridge, its main street lined with traditional row houses. Time seems to have stood still here, although it has taken a lot of effort to preserve this magic while developing the town as a destination. Derelict buildings have been reborn as cafes and lodges, and temples and civic buildings have been pulled back from the edge of ruin. With its attractive 18th-century architecture, pedestrian zone and outdoor dining, it has a distinctly European feel.

Siddha Gufa (Siddha Cave)

At 437m deep and 50m high, Siddha Gufa is said to be the largest cave in Nepal. Its cathedral-like interior is full stalactites and stalagmites, not to mention hundreds of bats, which whistle overhead.

Ralf’s Experience:

Is it worth to spend 2 hours in the car to get there and the same time back? Yes

After arrive the morning began with a short walk up to the Thani Mai Temple. A disappointment if you expect a historic monument as I did. But the views are impressive in particular if the weather is fine and you can enjoy the beauty of the Himalayan range. After this warm up we deserved a typical Newari lunch in the main street of the village that is kind of Bhaktapur light. Most of the buildings are maintained in the traditional style with shops, cafes and restaurants.

The absolute highlight Siddha Gufa is still to come. It takes about 1 hour steep hike to get to the entrance of the cave. Decent shoes and a strong torch are recommended as it gets dark and slippery inside. It is said that some holy Hindu scripts were written here in ancient times but apart from the religious background the cave itself with its rock formations are a once in a lifetime experience. In particular the last huge chamber to which you have to climb down about 15 on ladders. I will definitely visit the place again.
